The Muskegon Heritage Museum
Preserving Muskegon's Heritage Homes and Muskegon's Industrial Heritage
The Muskegon Heritage Association was formed in 1973 and incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3) in 1974. The purpose of the organization has been to assist in the preservation or restoration of buildings and homes in the oldest part of Muskegon, now called "Heritage Village." In addition. the Muskegon Heritage Association is working to preserve the industrial heritage of our community. A large part of Muskegon's history is in the industries and businesses that made this city a manufacturing capital beginning in the mid 19th Century and continue today. Making that history available for our current community members, especially the youngsters, and for generations to come is important to our community.
The Association was given a Corliss Valve Steam Engine in 1981 ( it is about 18 feet long and weighs over 12 tons) and just completed its restoration to full working order. With that as the centerpiece, the association has created a museum to focus on two things: Muskegon's Heritage Homes and Muskegon's Industrial Heritage. The Muskegon Heritage Museum is housed in a building built about 1905 in the Heritage Village area of Muskegon. The museum staff is all volunteers.
The Museum is located at 561 W. Western Ave in Downtown Muskegon.
