Cinema Sunday: My Way Home
The Muskegon Museum of Art is pleased to continue its series of film screenings that focus on exploring the art of cinema. My Way Home, Director: Bill Douglas, 1978 (126 minutes) (Preceded by the short film
My Ain Folks, 1973) Bill Douglas’ autobiographical films recount his harrowing experiences growing up in a rural mining town in 1940s Scotland. Confronted with material and emotional abandonment, confused and thwarted by the vicious world of adults, Jamie becomes increasing withdrawn as he is shuffled between his dysfunctional family and incarceration in a children’s home. It isn’t until his call-up for national service in Egypt that he finally discovers the release of friendship and encouragement for his imagination. At the turning point in this sparse and beautifully honest document, his simple declaration “I want to do something” splits the fervid air like a crack of thunder. The film begins at 2:00 p.m. at the Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 W. Webster Ave in Downtown Muskegon. The programmer and host: E.J. Hamacher. The movie is free with museum membership or with museum admission. For more information call 231-720-2571. www.muskegonartmuseum.org
